KLANG, 28 June – The Ministry of Transport (MOT) has identified several vacant land parcels surrounding stations along the Shah Alam Light Rail Transit 3 (LRT3) line as potential sites for Transit-Oriented Development (TOD). Minister of Transport, Anthony Loke, said the identified locations include Sri Andalas, Kayu Ara, Bandar Bukit Tinggi and Johan Setia stations, which offer sizeable land areas suitable for commercial developments or affordable housing projects. “If we only build park-and-ride facilities, the land is not being fully optimised as it serves solely as a parking area. For example, a facility with 600 parking bays would only directly benefit around 600 commuters who use it throughout the day. “Therefore, we must take a broader view. The Government’s policy is to optimise land use and expand the implementation of TOD concepts,” he said after the launch of the Shah Alam LRT3 line today, officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Loke added that the proposed developments would involve collaboration with the private sector to ensure local communities benefit from the economic opportunities generated by the new transport infrastructure. Meanwhile, he said that Prasarana Malaysia Berhad (Prasarana) is planning to add five more stations to the Shah Alam LRT3 line, namely Tropicana, Raja Muda, Temasya, Bukit Raja and Bandar Botanik, with construction expected to commence by the end of this year. Earlier, in his speech, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim called for Prasarana-owned land located near public transportation stations to be developed into public housing projects based on the TOD concept. The Prime Minister emphasised that developments in strategic locations should prioritise adequate parking facilities as well as commercial spaces for small and medium-sized entrepreneurs. He noted that such an approach would help reduce travel costs for the public, increase public transport usage, and potentially generate stronger commercial returns. |
