SHAH ALAM, 30 OCT: The Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) was honoured to present Klang's urban development plans at the United Cities and Local Governments Asia-Pacific (UCLG ASPAC) Haikou 2026 Conference in Hainan, China, yesterday.

During the conference's main forum, Klang Mayor, Datuk Abd Hamid Hussain, delivered a presentation entitled “Klang Royal City: Balancing Port Growth with a Green, Smart and Inclusive Future”, highlighting a balanced, sustainable, smart and inclusive approach to urban development.

Abd Hamid said the presentation also highlighted the strategic position of Port Klang as Malaysia's main maritime gateway, as well as its role in the shipping, logistics, container handling, industrial and international trade sectors.

He also highlighted the Klang Royal City Local Plan 2035 (Amendment 1), which takes into account developments in the industrial sector, including more than 36 industrial areas and new areas currently under development.

“At the same time, environmental sustainability remains a key priority through the implementation of the Low Carbon City Action Plan, river clean-up programmes and community participation.

“These efforts are also supported by strategic collaborations and strengthened governance through certification under the ISO 37001:2016 Anti-Bribery Management System (ABMS),” he said.

Meanwhile, Abd Hamid emphasised that economic growth and industrial development must be balanced with environmental conservation and community well-being to ensure that Klang remains competitive and liveable.

According to him, a balanced development approach is essential to ensure that residents benefit from the city's economic progress without compromising sustainability for future generations.

“Participation in the UCLG ASPAC Council, Haikou 2026 serves as a platform for MBDK to showcase Klang Royal City's potential to the international community.

“It also creates opportunities to exchange experiences and share best practices in urban development, particularly in sustainability, the adoption of smart approaches and social inclusivity,” he said.

The UCLG ASPAC Haikou 2026 Conference, which focuses on building a green, smart and inclusive urban future in the Asia-Pacific region, took place from 28 to 30 October 2026.
