 SHAH ALAM, 24 AUGUST: The 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) concluded today with Selangor finishing at the top of the medal standings after a dominant performance on home soil. The Red and Yellow contingent emerged as overall champions with 101 gold, 73 silver and 71 bronze medals, bringing their total haul to 245 medals and comfortably surpassing the initial target of 80 gold medals set before the Games. Selangor had already achieved its gold-medal target a day before the competition ended through the success of its esports squad, before adding more medals across several events on the final day. The Federal Territories finished second with 51 gold, 54 silver and 52 bronze medals, for a total of 157 medals. Terengganu placed third with 43 gold, 44 silver and 36 bronze medals (123 medals), while Sarawak, host of SUKMA 2024, finished fourth with 41 gold, 40 silver and 62 bronze medals (143 medals).  Among Selangor’s final-day successes came in silambam, where the state won the Mixed Rhythmic Without Weapons event at MBSJ Stadium, Serdang. The team of Venisha Saravanan, Sasmita Ravi, Roselynn Anuska Devit Raj, Sharvienrajh Selvam and Preteish Anbucelvan defeated Perak, who took silver, while Terengganu secured bronze. Selangor’s outstanding campaign was further highlighted by swimmer Eliza Tan Ai Shen, who was named SUKMA 2026 Sportswoman of the Games. The 19-year-old clocked 26.44 seconds to win the women’s 50m freestyle, breaking the previous Games record of 26.50 seconds set by Sabah’s Leung Chii Lin in 2008 at the Darul Ehsan Aquatic Complex. Eliza completed an impressive haul of seven gold medals when she led Selangor’s quartet to victory in the women’s 4x100m medley relay, setting a new Games record of 4:18.87.  Meanwhile, Pahang shooter Cheah Zen Hong was named SUKMA 2026 Sportsman of the Games after winning nine gold medals and one silver. The achievement surpassed his performance at SUKMA Sarawak 2024, where he won seven gold medals. Of his nine gold medals this year, eight came from individual and team events — four in each category — while another was secured in a duo event. Zen Hong also won a silver medal in an individual event and broke a championship record. Selangor last emerged as overall SUKMA champions at SUKMA Sarawak 2016, where the state collected 59 gold, 73 silver and 63 bronze medals. Held officially from 15 to 24 August 2026, SUKMA 2026 featured 37 sports and 368 events across nine districts in Selangor. |
